A Java Applet is a small Internet-based program written in Java, a programming language for the Web, which can be downloaded by any computer. Web browsers, which are often equipped with Java virtual machines, can interpret applets. Because applets are small in files size, cross-platform compatible, and highly secure (can't be used to access users' hard drives), they are ideal for small Internet applications accessible from a browser.

The applet from above was initially at the startpage of this website. However thanks to a legal tussle between Sun and Microsoft, the Java Virtual Machine isn't a part of Windows XP. Because the correct viewing of an applet may also depend on specific IE settings or video drivers, I replaced the applet with pure text.
